"Exalting the Savior, Equipping the Saints & Evangelizing the Sinner"

    Ephesians 4:10-15

He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things. And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ: That we [henceforth] be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ.

Pastoral Reflections - Sunday, January 8, 2012

We have reconvened our Bible Study experiences and our mid-week prayer celebration.  I want to invite and encourage each one of you to take advantage of these spiritual and family opportunities that God is blessings us with.   Furthermore, I want to reiterate that I believe this is the season of answered prayer.  The things which we have been faithful to ask God for, I believe He will reveal His faithfulness toward us by responding to us in this season.

Rev. John D. Tolbert, Senior Pastor

Being a New Testament Church, we only have one teacher and His name is Jesus.  Luke 11:1 states that Jesus was praying in a certain place.  When he finished, one of His disciples said to Him, "Lord teach us how to pray."  The disciples had been with Christ and saw Him pray.  They learned to understand something of the connection between his public life and His private life of prayer.  They learned to believe in Him as a master in the art of prayer; none could pray like Jesus.  So they petitioned him with this request, "Lord teach us how to pray."  As we consider this passage and this subject, I believe the disciples would tell us today that there are few things that surpass what Jesus taught them about prayer.  Trinity, as we grow in the Christian Life, the concept of Christ's never failing intercession on our behalf, becomes increasingly wonderful.  It stirs in us a desire to be like Christ, intercessors on the behalf of others.  As we see Jesus pray, we remember that no one can pray or teach like Him.  We agree with the disciples and say, "Lord, teach us how to pray."

Dr. Andrew Murray, a keen scholar in Christian thought and living, suggests that Prayer is what Christians need to be taught; it is fellowship with the unseen and most Holy One.  The powers of the eternal world are accessed through prayer.  Trinity, prayer is the very essence of true religion and ultimate relationship with our creator.  It is the channel of all blessings and the secret of power and life.  Through prayer, God has given to everyone the right to take hold of Him and His strength.  It is on prayer that promises wait for their fulfillment, the kingdom for its coming and the glory of God for its full salvation.  Every pupil needs a teacher who knows his work and has the gift of teaching, who in patience and in love; will condescend to the pupil's level of understanding.  Jesus Christ is all of this and much more!  No one can teach like Jesus.  It is Jesus, praying Himself, who teaches us to pray.  He knows what prayer is.  He expressed it in the trial and tears of His earthly life.  In heaven it is still His beloved work; His life there is intercession for believers.

Trinity, Jesus Christ did not teach His disciples how to preach, sing, usher, cook, or debate insignificant things.  He taught them how to pray.  To know how to speak to God is more vital than knowing how to speak to men.  It is power with God, not men, that is of supreme importance to the achievement of our future, individually and collectively.

Lord bless this place, we call Trinity & teach us how to pray!
