"Exalting the Savior, Equipping the Saints & Evangelizing the Sinner"
Ephesians 4:10-15
He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things. And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ: That we [henceforth] be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ.
Pastoral Reflections - Sunday, March 20, 2011
Our God is an awesome God. As we consider all that is happening in the world around us it is good to know that God continues to be in control. With so much devastation in the world in recent years I hear so many asking, "what in the world is going on?" Last week Japan reminded us once again how vulnerable the human race remains in spite of all our technological advancements. Nature has once again demonstrated to us that we are in control of nothing. As we pray for the people of Japan, the most recent victims of natural disaster, we are able to see, all too clearly, once again how little we are able to manage in the world we live in. On a much smaller scale, let us not forget how a simple snow covering or icing over in our southern states can bring our country to a standstill. As much as we would like to think we can handle anything, the truth is we cannot. We are limited. Our abilities, resources and intelligence are only able to take us so far. When we exhaust our human resources it is good to know that the God we serve is awesome.
Dr. Drew E. Marshall, Senior Pastor
Christians are not exempt from what happens in the world around us. We will be subject to the world we live in. As nature expresses and unleashes her wrath on the Christian community our confidence should be in the fact that God is with us. No matter how threatening the elements become they can never remove us from the eternal power and graces of God. Although we may experience loss of life, material things, and other resources we are eternally kept by the power of God. Nothing nature presents can overpower the Eternal. God is control. The hymn writer reminds us in Be Still My Soul that "The waves and winds still know His voice who ruled them while He dwelt below."
The same awesome God who spoke to the winds and waves and commanded, "Peace be still!" is with us. We must not lose hope or become doubtful in the midst of natural disasters. We must appreciate God's awesome power and presence. Our faith must continue to allow us to go forward trusting that God remains in control.
There is much that we don't understand and questions that remain unanswered when we see the devastation caused by nature and that is understandable. Nonetheless, as Christians our faith challenges us to put all of our anxiousness, fear, and questions in the hands of our awesome God. He alone ultimately knows the reason why.
